The POTS (Plain Old Telephony Service) market is currently much larger than the VoIP phone market. According to Gobi International, in 2004 there were 481 million POTS telephones sold worldwide - 150 million in the US alone. This is in comparison to roughly a million residential VoIP devices sold per year.

However, more than 27% of US households have broadband access, representing the buying power of 20 million POTS phones a year. This rapidly growing market segment of households with broadband is a prime target for VoIP services, especially ones that will allow subscribers to retain existing PSTN network.

Overall awareness to the possibilities offered by VoIP services is also on the rise, with almost 55% of households with internet access in the US, having knowledge about VoIP in 2004, according to TDG Research.
